Synopsis
This historical anime is just like ROMEO AND JULIET--but with ninjas and a higher body count. Set in 17th-century Japan, BASILISK centres on two rival families as they fight to see who will be the next shogun. Oboro and Gennosuke are caught in the middle of the 400-year-old war as they test the power of love. Volume six reveals the person behind the war, and the less-than-happy couple must choose between life and love. Features the complete series.
Everyone dies someday.....
Basilisk is a great series for almost anyone interested in action and/or romance.
What is Basilisk?
This is an easy one- it's like Romeo and Juliet but with the body count taken up a few (hundred) notches.
The premise of the show is that two warriors from opposing clans fall in love, the two clans are then ordered to massacre each other (you can see where this is going right?).
Anyways the series consists of the two clans trying to kill one anothers ninja with the two lovers stuck in the middle.
The animation is superb throughout and each battle is extreamly unique due to each characters strange/ usefull abilitys, for example a man who can melt into walls vs a man who can make his body turn to liquid. Each characters ability makes every fight feel fresh and exciting- this is one of the many features that kept me fixed on the screen for hours.
Each character has a very distinctive personality to go with their top notch style and look- this makes you love and/or hate them that much more, this also has/adds seriouse impact on the viewer when they are killed off.... which brings me to my one and only problem with this series- there are plenty of amazing characters included in each of the clans... at first anyway.... the thing is.... that they all seem to die so damn quickly (i think about six of them where killed off by episode 4)this means you have very little time to admire/despise them- this annoys me.
My final opinion is,
this is yet another great action title to add to any fans collection. But be warned, some of the themes of this show are of a very adult nature (there is at least one rape scene) and also try not to get too attached to any of the characters or there will be tears!
At this price- what are you waiting for!!!
thanks for reading.
Romeo & Juliet ninja style
Set in seventeenth century Japan `Basilisk' is the story of two feuding clans of ninja, the Iga and the Kouga. In order to settle the feud the heir to each clan is engaged to the other but when the manipulations of the retiring Shogun causes the truce between the two clans to be dissolved the two heirs are caught in the middle while a bloody war brakes out.
`Basilisk' is an entertaining and bloody series that has some very nice fight scenes and a plot that is involving even if it is somewhat predictable. The animation is very good and although the English dub does have a couple of rough bits, it is still good. The story itself may be somewhat predictable but it is still watchable and there are some nice tearjerker moments here and there. The characters are interesting and although some lack a bit of development their design is good. On the downside though, the series is a bit slow at the beginning and it does take until the second disc until the series starts to get really good.
`Basilisk' was a very entertaining series and while I would say that while it is not worth a full five stars, it was a close run thing.
Great anime, even greater price!
You know last year I was practically breaking a sweat every day running around stores and searching online for this anime and I could never find it! It was as if no-one had ever acknowledged its existence!
Thankfully I decided to give the search one last try, and what do you know? I found it, for a great deal too. The anime itself is fantastic.
For Naruto fans, you may or may not like this anime, it's far more sophisticated and adult orientated, faster paced, and just all round more entertaining and better than Naruto. It's like blending the concept of 'how Naruto should have been' with a Romeo & Juliet finesse to it.
A really special series. For those anime fans who enjoyed the likes of the Gundam franchise, Hellsing and Wolf's Rain, then you'll LOVE this!
